It’s agile and paperless

HDS means no more paperwork, reduced staff costs, filling out endless menu sheets and savings on printing costs. Under the old, paper-based system typically staff enter in the diet profile, print it out and the chef then updates on multiple forms; the lists are sent to various kitchenettes and staff carry diet information in folders on tea trolleys (that may or may not be updated).

Verdict: “It’s assisted us on costs with printing, paper and staff and we’ve also had it integrated into a care program so you’re not re-entering information into other programs.”

It’s resident-centric

Residents can perform menu surveys, provide feedback with a smiley face and chefs can create a special meal for Xmas Days or Mother’s Day without changing regular meal data. Photos of meals can be placed on the App and patients can click and choose themselves or with staff one on one.

Verdict: “This system has really helped with our compliance for the new legislation on standards about the “consumer-directed food experience”. If for instance we are serving a casserole and a resident wants beef sausages instead they can make that change easily, or even upgrade to lobster (at extra cost for resident).”

It’s healthier

HDS allows staff to create and maintain a recipe base, disable meal choices for allergies and capture residents’ food and fluid intake. It also generates a detailed report that can help residents’ weight management. The same report can be viewed to monitor food wastage. Individual resident’s nutritional intake can also be recorded automatically after each meal service. HDS is able to send alerts/notifications if a particular resident’s nutritional intake is below the recommended levels.

Verdict: “It’s a cloud-based system so if a nurse makes a change relating to an allergy, it is immediately recorded in the system, so all staff know.” 

User friendly

Very easy to learn / adapt system interface allows HDS users to navigate the system efficiently without having to look for user manuals and instructions or lengthy training sessions.

Verdict: “When we were looking for a program, we looked at a few. Some residents like to choose themselves and not have to bother with paperwork. Or if they can’t choose themselves, staff can assist with iPad. Even our older catering staff who aren’t very computer savvy say it was easy to implement.”

Reduces costs

Staff can take orders from their iPad and can focus on the dining experience rather than the paperwork.

Verdict: “We’ve dropped our rosters by 22.5 hours a fortnight since implementing HDS, and it means our staff are at the coalface interacting with residents, rather than compiling menus in a room manually.”
